Happy Gluten-Free New Year!

Last night, our family was invited over to a friend’s house to celebrate New Year’s Eve. Being invited anywhere for any event that involves food often makes us nervous.


Because we never know quite what to expect, especially the first time we go to someone’s house. And there’s always the fear of getting sick that looms in the back of our minds.

Sometimes those inviting us to dinner “get” all our food allergies, and sometimes they don’t. And unfortunately, sometimes you don’t know which it is until you get there and the food is being served.

A Happy Start

But I’m thankful because last night our friends went the extra mile and really ensured we had a gluten-free, allergen-free night. We enjoyed a meal of Cholent, which I had never had before last night. It’s somewhat similar to a chicken and bean stew. Traditionally, the dish often has barley in it, but fortunately that was not an ingredient in the dish our hosts prepared. The Cholent was delicious and we all enjoyed it.

To play it safe, I offered to bring a few things. The Artichoke and Bean Dip from my cookbook Celeste’s Best Gluten-Free, Allergen-Free Recipes, along with a loaf of the Multi-Grain Gluten-Free, Yeast-Free, Egg-Free Bread.

Then after dinner and a few rounds of dominoes (which our family had never played before, but was a lot of fun!) we had some mini gluten-free pumpkin pies.

One of my gifts for Christmas was the BabyCakes Pie Maker. Really look forward to playing around with the pie maker some more and seeing what else I can make.
