GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms) are a hot topic right now as we wait for California to vote on Prop 37, which will label foods telling us if they contain any of these genetically engineered foods.
How And Why Do GMOs Affect Those Who Are Celiac, Gluten Intolerant Or Gluten Sensitive?
There are three ways GMOs are affecting those of us already having issues with gluten.
1) Leaky Gut
Eating a lot of GMOs can lead to a leaky gut
, creating the holes in the walls of the intestines, allowing undigested foods to pass through to the bloodstream.
The intestinal lining is the barrier that determines what should pass into the bloodsteam. When it is damaged, the immune cells react to the proteins that pass through, and this leads to an inflammatory response.
This creates a cycle - more foods coming in through a leaky gut - more reactions, and now people start having trouble with the proteins in other foods like soy, dairy and corn.
2) Suppressed Digestion
Soybeans contain a trypsin inhibitor. Trypsin is a enzyme that breaks down dietary proteins. Raw GMO soybeans contain up to 27% more of this inhibitor. And even though cooking soybeans would normally reduce the amount of this protein, the trypsin inhibitor in GM varieties appears to be more heat resistant and can contain seven times more of this inhibitor than cooked non-GM soy.
Just think about how that might affect your digestive system.
Eating GMOs also creates less enzymes which break down starch and protein in testing done on mice, which contribute further to a suppressed digestive system.
3) Increased Allergen Load
GM crops might create new allergies because the imported genes produce a new protein, which has never before been present. The new protein may often trigger reactions.
The Bt-toxin produced in certain corn has properties from egg yolk which may contribute to those with allergies to eggs.
Doctor's Advice For Those With Celiac, Gluten Sensitivity And Gluten Intolerance
Eating GMOs may not cause gluten intolerance but the genetically modified foods may add to the symptoms and make them worse.
Many doctors across the country are finding patients who remove both GMOs as well as gluten are experiencing a quicker and more complete recovery from many of their symptoms including:
- irritable bowel
- inflammatory bowels
- infertility problems
- weight problems
- skin problems
